History
Ten years ago the small, coastal Maine town of
Milbridge experienced a rapid influx of Latino/s immigrant workers.
These workers from Mexico and Honduras decided to leave the "migrant
stream" and settle here with their families. Through the foresight and
hard work of several members of the community, language and culture
exchanges were started. This helped to diffuse cultural
misunderstandings and bring diverse members of the community together
to talk about how they could help one another. The original partnership
operated with a fiscal sponsorship and continued to build relationships
and create a history of service and support for the Latino community.
In 2005, we underwent a change in leadership,
incorporated with the state as a nonprofit and received 501(c) 3
tax-exempt status from the IRS. Today, Mano en Mano continues to build
bridges of understanding, provide language and cultural training, and
serve as a resource center for the community.
